Today, we are very proud to announce the release of Media Critic, a tool that uses AI to detect journalistic failings, whether they stem from the laziness of reporters or from agenda-driven attempts to manipulate public opinion.
Simply enter the URL of the news article you would like to analyze into the Media Critic interface, and it will generate a comprehensive critique of the article within seconds.
The journalistic failings it’s designed to detect fall within the following broad categories:
- manipulative messaging
- misdirection
- systemic bias
- misleading framing
- smears and puff pieces
- inadequate sourcing
- insensitive treatment of mental health
- sensationalism
- breaches of basic journalistic ethics
- writing weaknesses
- newsworthiness
Naturally, Media Critic applies the same standards to every article it analyzes regardless of political leanings.
The tool is free to use, and empowers the public to combat bad journalistic practices in real time.
We are also working on a Media Critic bot that will allow users to use the tool directly within social media platforms like X (Twitter) and Bluesky, where much of the public discussion around the media actually occurs.
We’re attempting to do something quite ambitious with this project and we’re very excited by the prospect of actually succeeding. However, there is plenty of room for improvement in the responses generated by Media Critic. It’s output is generally very insightful, but as with any AI generated content, you should be aware that it will sometimes make mistakes.
Development of Media Critic is ongoing so if you have any useful feedback that could help us improve it, that would be very valuable to us. We’ll keep posting about Media Critic here over the coming months to talk about many of the challenges we’ve faced in getting this to work so stayed tuned in for that.
